We Stand With Margie
Margie Winters is the former Director of Religious Education at Waldron Mercy Academy, a school sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy. She was fired this past summer after a parent discovered her same sex marriage to her partner, Andrea Vettori. Margie's exemplary ministry of eight years to the school community brought the Catholic faith alive to students, parents, and faculty alike. Year after year, she consistently garnered positive reviews from parents and staff while being awarded with increased responsibilities at the school. Her work was never questioned and she was held in the highest regard.
Parents were understandably devastated. What started as small meetings in living rooms across the Philadelphia area grew into a movement of parents and supporters who refuse to believe that Catholic Identity is born out of firing those who walk with us and challenge us to live our lives in faith, hope and mercy.A GoFundMe was establed to help Margie overcome the shock of losing both her job and long established career. Letters were written, petitions were signed and voices were raised. There were tweets and likes as well as articles, editorials and interviews. No stone was left unturned in an effort to get Margie rehired and let it be known that this was not ok.
Margie was not the first one fired but we pledge to work towards making her the last. Our networks of parents, alumni and supporters, both local and across the world are lending their support to the cause. The stage is set and ripples of hope can be felt. We are inspired.
